🌐 Apple's Final Cut Updates, New VP Studios
Welcome to VP Land!
People weren’t happy about Apple’s new iPad ad (it did not bring me joy). They’ve since apologized. My favorite iPad still remains Gold Lion.
This weekend, we’re embedding with nine filmmakers who are competing in Cinema Synthetica, a 48-hour AI filmmaking competition.
We’ll dive deep into their process and how they see AI playing out in the future of filmmaking.
Films will premiere at AI on the Lot next Thursday - discount code below if you want to join.
Alright, let’s jump into it!
AI Meets the Cloud
The cloud. Not as new of a hot topic as AI, but it’s inevitably part of all of our media workflows. Here’s what we’ve been seeing with new tools and solutions to help work with our media faster and better.
Managing Data & Workflows
Max von Wolff just announced the release of Ozone, a cloud storage solution targeting video editors that empowers users to manage and centralize all media files in a single, intuitive platform
OpenDrive helps reduce hardware investments and rack space requirements with its containerization approach.
Projective's Strawberry Skies simplifies remote post-production workflows, enabling seamless collaboration, asset management, and security across cloud and on-premise environments.
AI & The Cloud
Axle AI can manage your media and also search for specific faces, words, and objects in your media. Axle can also run on-prem - CEO Sam Bogoch gave a good cutoff example of around 40 TB when the cost of keeping everything on the cloud becomes expensive and on-prem storage makes more sense.
We’ve covered Strada a bunch. Strada's custom orchestration layer and AI engine brings tagging and transcribing right into media management after recording stops. And they’ve outlined a vision for an AI marketplace and turning any connected hard drive into a cloud accessible drive.

Final Cut Brings Remote Camera to iPhone
iPad ad aside, Apple did announce some interesting updates for Final Cut. Most of the interesting stuff is with the iPad and now iPhone, but Mac got a little bit too.
Multicam for iPad
Final cut on iPad now supports live multicam with up to 4 feeds. Those feeds can all come from various iPhones running the new Final Cut Camera app.
The iPhones can be remotely controlled and monitored from the iPad. It also introduces a camera to cloud model we’ve seen established in other pipelines - proxies get added to the project to edit right away while original media gets sync’d later or after uploading.
If you’re not doing multicam this still looks like a great update to use the iPad as a wireless camera monitor - this is something Filmic did for a long time that I’ve missed in the Blackmagic app.
Final Cut Pro Adds AI Color Grading
Final Cut has had a form of AI color grading since it’s launch - with match color and a form of auto-coloring.
But their new AI color grading feature adjusts the color settings on the clip - so you can see what it’s doing and go back in and adjust to your liking.
They also added Smooth Slo-Mo - a new model for slowing down footage that uses AI to help generate the missing frames.
