Welcome to another edition of VP Land. Let’s talk cameras and audio.

and more! Let’s dive in.

MAIN STAGE

RØDE Go Goes Pro

Source: RØDE

The ubiquitous content creator microphone, the boxy RØDE Go, just got an upgrade with the new RØDE Wireless Pro.

32-bit Float Recording

One of the handy things about the RØDE mics has been their internal recording features, to have an audio backup just in case you’re filming run and gun and have some wireless interference.

The Pro has 32-bit float recording, which basically removes any chance of audio clipping. This gets recorded onto the 32GB internal storage of each device (good for 40 hours).

RØDE even says don’t bother setting gain levels - you’ll capture everything.

Timecode Sync

Another pro-level improvement is the built-in timecode generator. Using their RØDE Central app, there seems to be a bunch of configuration options to sync timecode between the audio devices and your camera (the demo video showed a RØDE pushing its timecode to a BMPCC).

This is a great pro-level feature and really handy if you do need to sync those 32-bit internal recordings after shooting.

What’s Missing / Hasn’t Changed

There’s still no Bluetooth built into the transmitters. If you want to go mobile and record on a smartphone, you still need to use adapters and a rig to connect the receiver to your phone.

The box form factor is still the same. There isn’t a sleeker, more discreet option like we’ve seen from DJI or Comica.

But at this point, the boxy mic pack clipped onto a shirt has sort of become…iconic?

SECOND UNIT

Sony’s new A6700 camera

What’s New

  • More AI and vlogging tools built in, like autoframing (which was first introduced in the ZV-E1).

  • New 26MP BSI CMOS APS-C sensor and the latest Bionz XR processor.

  • 4K/60p video capture or 120p with a crop. This is a big bump up from the A6600, which could only record up to 30 fps.

Riverside Keeps Leveling Up Their Editing Features

Last week we covered Descript acquiring SquadCast, which now brings a remote recording studio and video editing app under one roof.

Riverside isn’t sitting idly. The remote recording app has been rolling out more editing tools, including improved timeline editing features.
